Studies have found that both type 1 and type 2 diabetes likely raise your risk of developing Atrial Fibrillation, though the link seems to be greater if you have diabetes mellitus. The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) is increasing worldwide and among factors that aggravate the risk is diabetes mellitus (DM). So, if there is an association between diabetes mellitus and atrial fibrillation, diabetes is a modifiable risk factor for atrial fibrillation. Because of this, we are trying to find if there is an association between diabetes mellitus and atrial fibrillation. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between Diabetes Mellitus and Atrial Fibrillation. Methods and Materials: This is a retrospective case-control study. The study consisted of 141 patients suffering from atrial fibrillation with ECG changes in a group of cases and 141 in a group of controls who did not have ECG changes for Atrial Fibrillation. The participants for this study were consecutively elected when identified with AF, and for each subject with AF, the next subjects in sinus rhythm of the same gender were recruited as control subjects. Results: The study group consisted of 141 patients, ages 19-99 years. The age category 41-60 years comprises most of the patients (70patients, 49.6%). From the 141patients with atrial fibrillation, 41 patients (29%) had Diabetes Mellitus, but in control group only 25 patients had DM, this resulted with OR=1.9.
