Instructions for Authors
General Information
The Afghan Medical Journal (AMJ) is a peer-reviewed, open-access medical journal committed to publishing high-quality scientific research in medicine, public health, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, allied health sciences, and biomedical sciences. Manuscripts must be original, scientifically sound, and must not have been published or submitted elsewhere.
All manuscripts should comply with the latest recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), and the EQUATOR Network reporting guidelines.

Manuscript Preparation
Manuscripts should be prepared in Microsoft Word (.doc or .dcx).
Formatting requirements:
- Font: Times New Roman
- Font size: 12 p t
- Line spacing: 1.5
- Margins: 2.5 cm on all sides
- Continuous page numbering
- Continuous line numbering is recommended
- SI units should be used throughout the manuscript.
- Define abbreviations at first mention.
- Scientific names should be written in italics.
Manuscript Structure
The manuscript should be organized in the following order:

- Abstract

- Introduction
- Materials and Methods
- Results
- Discussion
- Conclusion
- Acknowledgments
- Authors' Contributions
- Funding Statement
- Conflict of Interest
- Ethical Approval
- Informed Consent (if applicable)

Title Page
The title page should include:
- Full article title (maximum 20 words)
- Running title (maximum 50 characters)
- Full names of all authors
- Institutional affiliations
- ORCID IDs (recommended)
- Corresponding author's name
- Postal address
- Telephone number
- Email address
Abstract
The abstract must be structured and contain 250–300 words using the following headings:
- Background
- Objective
- Methods
- Results
- Conclusion
The abstract should not contain references, tables, figures, or unexplained abbreviations.
Keywords
Provide 3–6 keywords, preferably selected from the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) database.
Introduction
Recommended length: 400–700 words
The introduction should include:
- Background of the study
- Current knowledge
- Knowledge gap
- Rationale
- Study objective(s)
Materials and Methods
Recommended length: 700–1,200 words
Include the following information:
- Study design
- Study setting
- Study period
- Study population
- Eligibility criteria
- Sample size calculation
- Sampling method
- Data collection procedures
- Variables
- Outcome measures
- Statistical analysis
- Ethical considerations
Authors should identify the statistical software used (e.g., SPSS, Stata, R, or SAS).
Results
Recommended length: 700–1,200 words
Results should be presented logically without interpretation.
Maximum:
- 6 Tables
- 6 Figures
All tables and figures must be cited in the text in numerical order.
Discussion
Recommended length: 800–1,200 words
The discussion should include:
- Interpretation of findings
- Comparison with previous studies
- Clinical implications
- Strengths
- Limitations
- Recommendations for future research
Conclusion
Recommended length: 150–300 words
Provide a concise summary of the principal findings and their implications without repeating the results.
